Rocky Mountain Endurance Series
Josh Tostado's sponsors:
This week Colin is really excited to announce a pretty special, and timely, guest to the Mountain Bikes Apart Podcast: none other than Kerry MacPhee, one of Scotland’s excellent Commonwealth Games mountain biking team.
Kerry started out as a triathlete, racing a fair bit in that discipline in past years. She added mountain biking to her tri training, though, and soon discovered she had a real knack for it. That, along with the fact that Mountain bike is, of course, far more exciting than skinny wheels and plodding along on foot, led her to mountain bike racing, and now to the commonwealth games.
In the interview Kerry talks about what it’s like to be part of her national team at such a big event, along with what training and prep she’s gone through to get there. It was great to get an insight into what it’s like to be an athlete at that level – something Colins thinks we’ve all dreamed about at some point!
As always, before we start, your feedback means tonnes to Colin, so please do get in touch via the following methods:
Email – just use the contact form here
Comments – pop a comment in at the bottom of this page
Voicemail – use the ‘Leave a voicemail’ button on the right
iTunes reviews – drop one in via the iTunes Link
Mountain Biking Race Tips
Later in the Interview Kerry and Colin discuss mountain bike racing in general, and her tips on getting into racing in the first place. Her advice is really encouraging so if you’re dawdling about entering your first race, have a listen and get motivated. There are even a few training tips sprinkled in there to help you out.
They also discussed the Scottish Cross Country series a few times – that’s a great set of races to get started in as they offer a big range of levels, from total beginners and up.
Mountain Bike Coaching
On the subject of training, Kerry and Colin discussed the fact that it’s often a great idea to get a bit of coaching every now and again throughout your biking life, as you hit skill plateaus. They mentioned Chris Ball and his company, Dirtschool, who are pretty well known as a great option for that in Scotland, having coached many a young DH racer in their time. They’ve even got Ruaridh Cunningham and Rab Wardell on their team, previous downhill and a cross country champions respectively.
Where to Watch Kerry at the Commonwealth Games
Colin is pretty excited to watch the Commonwealth Games mountain biking now, as you might be able to tell! You can see it too on Tuesday the 29th July. Kerry is racing in the women’s race at 11.31 alongside Lee Craigie and Jessica Robert for team Scotland. Then the men race at 14.00, and the Team Scotland guys to look out for are Grant Ferguson, Kenta Gallagher and Gareth Montgomerie.
If you want to show Kerry your support then give her a cheer on Twitter at@KerryMacPhee.
The race is going on at Cathkin Braes, so if you want to follow in their footsteps, post commonwealth games, then you can find the trails here: Cathkin Braes.
Host, Mark Stover, gives you a rundown of some of the latest endurance news. Listen in to hear about several races throughout the country, including the Breckenridge 100, the High Cascades 100, the Firecracker 50, BC Bike Race, Tatanka 100, Iron Mountain 100k, the Munga and more!
As usual, Mark brings a full lineup of great information about some of your favorite endurance races. He previews a few events, including ORAMM and USA Cycling Marathon Nationals. If you haven't been able to sift through all of latest news or can't get the full story by reading websites and blogs, you should listen.

Whistler's extended play takes effect this weekend giving you three more hours to shred each day AND the resort announced recently that the Garbanzo Zone will be opening up on June 21st, a full week earlier than last year.
The Biker Cross trail has been the subject of a mini excavator assault, which has delivered a well-deserved total rebuild of this high traffic lower trail. The original Biker Cross was built as a dual slalom course, however in recent years the surrounding vegetation has had more of a singletrack route in mind. The rebuild has focused on bringing the course back to its former glory in this regard, now plenty wide allowing slower riders to take the lower route and more advanced riders to tackle the high line packed with bermy jibs on this flowing roller coaster of a trail. Every berm is being rebuilt with playful, springy transitions, and jumps through the flats have been torn down to make room for creative new features with multiple line options to switch up your descent.
Silver Star Mountain Resort, located in Vernon, British Columbia, recently announced that it plans to add 25 kilometers of new cross country mountain bike trails this year, with more in the works for 2015. When complete, the expansion's estimated cost will equal more than $250,000 and will provide riders of all abilities a more diverse selection of trail options. Silver Star began its expansion in 2013 to introduce a new XC, all-mountain riding component to the resort.
Silver Star has expanded its downhill trail network to provide riders with the option of riding a new intermediate trail from the summit to the mountain base. Jedi Mind Trick, a blue trail that runs from the base of the mountain to half-way up is being extended to the summit and the double black diamond trail Pro-Star – Walk the Line, that runs from the summit to half way down the mountain will be extended to the bottom. The trail network that will link existing trails with new trails are currently in their final stages of construction.
Mammoth will be opening the gondola this weekend, which is one week earlier than originally planned. MTBparks.com friend Eric Hunter tells MTBparks that trails at Mammoth Bike Park are in amazing shape right now.
The Snow Summit Bike Park at Big Bear flips the schedule to daily operations next week. This week the Snow Summit Trail Crew made their way over to Miracle Mile to put in some work! The Down-Flat-Up Bridge on Lower Miracle has been shortened and the mandatory-left when airing off the bridge will now line up better and take you into a new jump! Basically this section of trail is going to be faster and better. They hauled in tons of pavers to make the section ride faster.
There's still time to register for the VP Components EnduroFest coming up June 21 & 22. Running at high elevation, this event features a course that puts the “endure” into enduro, with three arduous transfer climbs plus three technically demanding timed downhill stages on loose, rocky and dusty terrain.
The winner in each category is based on the fastest total time in the three special stages. The eleven categories include beginner, sport, expert and pro riders. $4,000 goes to the top 20 Pro/Open men; with $1,000 split between the top ten Pro/Open women. Awards go three deep in all other categories.
Summer arrived in Park City last week as the resort fired up the Town Lift for mountain bikes on June 6. The Crescent Lift is scheduled to open June 21, which will provide more than 70 miles of lift-accessed terrain on the town’s centralized resort.

John Kolarevic is the director of the X100 mountain bike race in Traverse City, Michigan on Saturday, August 23, 2014. He joins the show to discuss the race, including pre and post-race information, race distance options, and course details. If you were on the fence about racing the X100, this episode should help to push you over the edge.
The X100 is 100 miles of twisting single track that winds in and out of county gravel roads, two tracks and fire roads. Bikers roll through the most beautiful terrain Michigan has to offer: deep woods and steep hills dotted with pristine lakes, streams and ponds. The X100 has some killer cross-country riding – until now – only by die-hard locals.
