ABOUT THIS EPISODE

“Back in the Shack” is a mini series of discussions in a fun, unique format. The same old sit downs get a little boring, so Ben is bringing some people into his ice fishing tent and asking them ten questions. You get some different discussions from a unique setting. Whether they catch fish is up to the mood of the fish!

In this episode, bike industry veteran/first Back in the Shack guest/huge Pearl Jam fan, Joe Vadeboncoeur, gets in the shack for his first ice fishing experience and answers ten questions.

---------

ABOUT JOE

Joe lived in Texas as a kid and went to college there as well.  But, when his girlfriend/future wife (Liz) decided to go to school in Boulder, he joined her there in 1982.  He raced road bikes (wasn’t very good), and Liz went to school.

A few jobs later, Joe and Liz moved to Park City, Utah and he went to work for Trek as an outside sales rep.  At that point, Joe’s road biking life was ending, and he’s been primarily a mountain biker ever since.

That move and sales rep position lead to a job in product management at Trek, where Joe was the first Gary Fisher product manager after Trek bought the brand.  He then ran all of product development and marketing for about 15 years at Trek.  Joe also started all the Trek race teams that are in existence today, and was the unfortunate soul that had to tell Lance Armstrong that Trek could not continue to sponsor him.  His final position at Trek was managing the direct retail stores around the world and, after nearly 30 years, he left Trek in January of 2018.

Joe and Liz moved to Seeley, Wisconsin, where he started his own consulting business, GoodHeart Solutions (GoodHeartsolutions.com – Good Heart is the literal translation of my last name).  He specializes in helping others with development in their business and is the guy that you call when you cannot figure out how to get your business beyond its current level. Working in your business is not the same as working on your business.

Joe loves living in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, because it is all about outside activities and he can combine his love of doing outdoor things with his business.  He is on the board of the local mountain bike organization, Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA), which manages about 100 miles of singletrack in the area. He is also involved in putting on the first enduro race in the area. Joe’s excited because he gets to work with so many other people who are passionate about similar pursuits and that there is so much opportunity with everything up here in the Northwoods.

Front Lines MTB Podcast Show Page

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Greig Gjerdalen is faculty with the school of Outdoor Recreation Management at Capilano University in North Vancouver, BC, Canada. Greig is currently studying how mountain bikers interact with nature and he’s asking: “Is nature merely scenery and therefore more of a backdrop for outdoor recreation pursuits than the center of our relational immersion?” Grieg shares his research and some ideas on what Trail Associations can do to increase a riders relationship with their natural surroundings.

About Brent:

Brent is a Trail Builder with the North Shore Mountain Bike Association and focuses on the Upper and Lower Griffen Trails on Mount Fromme. Through his work with Trailforks he’s come to discover the world of advocacy beyond just his home in North Vancouver, and serving as the inspiration to create Front Lines MTB.

New England Dirt Show Page

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

MTB Ben sets up in the base lodge at Highland Mountain Bike Park and is joined by Dave Smutok, VP of Business Development, and James Patterson, Trail Crew Director. They have taken an interesting approach to winter and fat biking. Owning and operating the country’s first dedicated lift-served mountain bike park, there is no skiing operation to focus on during the winter. But, being in New England, they still get a ton of snow. SO… why not build an epic fat biking destination out of their downhill and xc trail network! Listen in as they discuss winter at the bike park, the Winter Woolly event, fatbikes, and more.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Lane Wilson joins Matt to discuss how Oveja Negra Bikepacking has evolved through it’s history. Lane gives the background on how it all started, how they ended up in Salida, and what the company is doing today. Tune in to hear about a company that makes Salida, CO a little cooler just by being in town.

------------

ABOUT OVEJA NEGRA BIKEPACKING:

Since our start in 2012 we’ve been manufacturing top shelf bikepacking gear in the Upper Arkansas Valley of Colorado.  Born in a 300 square foot hole in the wall shop in the old mining town of Leadville, we’ve since moved our operation down valley to the river town of Salida, CO.  Every bag that bears our name is manufactured by a small team of dedicated and talented sewers right here in our Salida shop.  We’re committed not only to manufacturing in the United States, but doing so with as many domestically sourced materials as possible.  Beyond our ethos of domestic manufacturing, quality is king at Oveja Negra.  We are obsessive about the details and keep a close eye on every product, enabling our customers to focus on the adventure at hand.

ABOUT SEVEN POINTS CBD:

Headquartered in Southern California, a mecca for the active lifestyle, nearly everyone at Seven Points is part of the outdoor lifestyle scene. The founder, employees and many of our business partners participate in a variety of activities like cycling, snowboarding, kitesurfing & mountain biking and speed skating. As we all know, these activities often “reward” the individual with sports related injuries and pains associated with long term participation in your favorite sport. Since Seven Points CBD is a company dedicated to health, happiness and the active, outdoor lifestyle, we wanted to find an alternative to traditional pain killers and expensive, often addictive pharmaceuticals. As a result, we have created a brand focused on enhancing the recovery & wellness for athletes of all kinds.

The founder of Seven Points has personally seen the negative impact of prescription drug abuse & addiction, specifically prescription opiate based pain killers, and believes CBD offers a healthier, non psychoactive, non addictive alternative.

Front Lines MTB Show Page

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

The original question for this episode was asked a year ago by Jennifer Deeks, President of the Guelph Off Road Bicycling Association. We’ll hear some previously unheard audio from a number of past guests’ including, Mark Schmidt of Parks Canada, Drew Engelmann of Yamaha Bicycles and the Trail Stewards of San Diego, Tom Stuessy, Executive Director of the Vermont Mountain Bike Association and Bruce Alt, founder of the Central Arkansas Trail Alliance. In addition we’ll be hearing from Erik Hillard about his benicesayhi.org initiative.
