June 8, 2014 - Neil sits down with one of the most experienced bikepackers out there. It's an interesting discussion that covers a wide variety of topics, from Jefe's history in mountain biking and bikepacking to next week's Tour Divide.

They chat about a lot of the thoughts and details about racing long distances and listeners have the unique opportunity to get inside the head of one of the very few who has raced the Colorado Trail Race and Tour Divide several times. It's also a very interesting discussion because Neil, the host, is a very strong young rider who is coming into his own and Jefe is a veteran who has seen a ton and continues to push his boundaries. Listen in to hear what Jefe's advice is for Tour Divide rookies too!

Have a listen now to hear about Andrea's solution to her swollen legs, another discussion about chainrings and 1 x 11 setups, and some thoughts about what could actually be in those backpacks (pumps, folding bikes, and weed were mentioned...).

Park News:

Whistler Bike Park, BC

Whistler's extended play takes effect this weekend giving you three more hours to shred each day AND the resort announced recently that the Garbanzo Zone will be opening up on June 21st, a full week earlier than last year.

Sun Peaks, BC

The Biker Cross trail has been the subject of a mini excavator assault, which has delivered a well-deserved total rebuild of this high traffic lower trail. The original Biker Cross was built as a dual slalom course, however in recent years the surrounding vegetation has had more of a singletrack route in mind. The rebuild has focused on bringing the course back to its former glory in this regard, now plenty wide allowing slower riders to take the lower route and more advanced riders to tackle the high line packed with bermy jibs on this flowing roller coaster of a trail. Every berm is being rebuilt with playful, springy transitions, and jumps through the flats have been torn down to make room for creative new features with multiple line options to switch up your descent.

Silver Star, BC

Silver Star Mountain Resort, located in Vernon, British Columbia, recently announced that it plans to add 25 kilometers of new cross country mountain bike trails this year, with more in the works for 2015. When complete, the expansion's estimated cost will equal more than $250,000 and will provide riders of all abilities a more diverse selection of trail options. Silver Star began its expansion in 2013 to introduce a new XC, all-mountain riding component to the resort.

Silver Star has expanded its downhill trail network to provide riders with the option of riding a new intermediate trail from the summit to the mountain base. Jedi Mind Trick, a blue trail that runs from the base of the mountain to half-way up is being extended to the summit and the double black diamond trail Pro-Star – Walk the Line, that runs from the summit to half way down the mountain will be extended to the bottom. The trail network that will link existing trails with new trails are currently in their final stages of construction.

Mammoth Bike Park, CA:

Mammoth will be opening the gondola this weekend, which is one week earlier than originally planned. MTBparks.com friend Eric Hunter tells MTBparks that trails at Mammoth Bike Park are in amazing shape right now.

Snow Summit, CA

The Snow Summit Bike Park at Big Bear flips the schedule to daily operations next week. This week the Snow Summit Trail Crew made their way over to Miracle Mile to put in some work! The Down-Flat-Up Bridge on Lower Miracle has been shortened and the mandatory-left when airing off the bridge will now line up better and take you into a new jump! Basically this section of trail is going to be faster and better. They hauled in tons of pavers to make the section ride faster.

China Peak, CA

There's still time to register for the VP Components EnduroFest coming up June 21 & 22. Running at high elevation, this event features a course that puts the “endure” into enduro, with three arduous transfer climbs plus three technically demanding timed downhill stages on loose, rocky and dusty terrain.

The winner in each category is based on the fastest total time in the three special stages. The eleven categories include beginner, sport, expert and pro riders. $4,000 goes to the top 20 Pro/Open men; with $1,000 split between the top ten Pro/Open women. Awards go three deep in all other categories.

Park City Mountain Resort, UT

Summer arrived in Park City last week as the resort fired up the Town Lift for mountain bikes on June 6. The Crescent Lift is scheduled to open June 21, which will provide more than 70 miles of lift-accessed terrain on the town’s centralized resort.

In this episode, Andrea points out a disturbing trend she noticed at the Mulberry Gap Women's Weekend - women seem to be riding bikes that have majoy issues, while, knowlingly, their husband/boyfriends do nothing about it. Also, the debate rages on about pressfit bottom brackets and more.

Do you suspect that your man friend isn't keeping your bike up to par? Are you one of the guys just throwing your lady out on a crappy bike? Have you ever had a problem with a bottom bracket? Let us know!

This week on the Mountain Bikes Apart Podcast Colin has a couple of things for you. An intro to the What Mountain Bike Guide here on the website, and an interview with Ruth Hallet from Trail42.

As always, before we start, your feedback means tonnes to Colin, so please do get in touch via the following methods:

  • Email – just use the contact form here

  • Comments – pop a comment in at the bottom of this page

  • Voicemail – use the ‘Leave a voicemail’ button on the right

Shoutouts to Podcast Listeners

Colin has had some great feedback as usual, and here’s a highlight from Mark Saunders:

Hi Colin, Just a quick message to say hello and thanks for the podcast which is how I found your website. Keep up the good work there aren’t enough mountain bike podcasts out there. As for a request I am looking at F/S bikes at the moment can you recommend a decent one for a budget of around £1500
Regards

Thanks, as always for the kind words Mark. As to your question, have a look below for some info on the What Mountain Bike guide which aims to answer this. But, I will cover this stuff in future podcasts. It’s something Colin is asked a lot (for all sorts of price brackets and bike types) so he'll definitely be filling a hole there.

The What Mountain Bike Guide

In this episode Colin the What Mountain Bike guide to new listeners. It’s something Colin has been working on for the past two years to answer all of the questions that he gets from beginners and upgraders.

It’ll help beginners decide what type of bike to get in the first place, and it’ll help experienced bikers decide on what to upgrade, when and what brands to buy. The guide is currently available to read here on the site, or you can download a Kindle copy on Amazon for the lowest price he can make it.

Please let him know what you think of the guide – email me on the contact form, or drop a comment below.

Interview with Ruth Hallet from Trail42

Colin has had a bit of contact with Trail42 as they’ve launched and grown over the past couple of years. It’s been great to see the success of their ethical mountain biking kit, such as the bamboo biking tops they produce which he has covered in the past.

Colin thought it’d be interesting to chat to Ruth about the company and plans for the future, so he asked if she’d come on the Podcast. They ended up talking products and biking and trails in their local area, so if you’re interested in the mountain biking industry or trails in the SW of England, then this’ll be worth a listen.

In this episode of The Mountain Bikes Apart Podcast, Colin answers a question sent in by Gavin Clafton – “What’s your bucket list of UK trails?”

Colin thought the UK might be a little big to cover, so he decided to split it up a little. He's covering Scottish trails this week and aiming to cover the rest of the UK (and the world!) in future episodes.

On that note, if you consider yourself pretty expert in a region of trails then get in touch – he'd love to get you on the podcast and cover your area, wherever you are in the world.

Listener Question:

Here’s what Gavin asked in the first place:

"Hi. I mainly want to just say thank you for the time and effort to make the great podcasts. I travel a lot with work and save your podcasts for flights and those awkward meals for one where I’m sat with my earphones in. I have you for company! I’m new to mountain biking and just splashed out on a 2nd hand trek fuel 9 over Xmas. I’m pretty sporty though and very competitive so I’ve spent lots of time on YouTube, reading a great book by McCormack and Lopes called Mastering Mountain Bike Skills which I would highly recommend (Colin: me too!). This week I managed my first manual for a metre or so I’m feeling pretty chuffed. Anyway ideas for podcasts: In terms of trails I know a lot of stuff is out there but it would be great to have a top 10 bucket list of uk trails."

Thanks for that great question Gavin. You'll find a summary below, but have a listen to the podcast for full details.

As always, before we start, your feedback means tonnes to Colin, so please do get in touch via the following methods:

  • Email – just use the contact form here

The Best Scottish Mountain Bike Trails

Here are Colin's top 5 Scottish mountain bike trails – let him know yours in the comments below! And listen to the podcast here for the full details of what makes them so great.

5. Laggan Wolftrax – a trail with a huge amount of variety, some great skills testing sections and a monster bit of northshore!

4. Kirroughtree – One of the most underutilised amazing trails in the country. Fast, flowing and home to the world (?) famous McMoab!

3. Glentress – The perennial UK favourite, and deservedly so. One of the biggest trail centres in the UK, if not THE biggest, with a huge range of trails, from XC to downhill Freeride. And the best facilities around.

2. Innerleithen – Glentress’ less pretty but more exciting big brother, and always a lot quieter.  Check out the 3 drops on Caddon bank for a great challenge.

1. Golspie Highland Wildcat Trails – Even less visited than Kirroughtree, but one of the best trails in existence. The classic up and down, with the longest down around, and split into amazing, jumpy, bermy goodness followed by dark, tree lined, rocky technicals. A biker’s dream.

I’m going to do my best to make the episodes more regular in future, so will try to live up to that. And the most recent 2 eps have been a fair bit longer so hopefully that’s meeting your desire for content Mulligan. Thanks for the feedback!

I’d really appreciate it if you would review the Podcast – just open up iTunes and go to the podcast page on iTunes and click the ‘View in iTunes’ button.
