Nathan, Auk, and Tani sit down to talk bikes, shop news, and bottom bracket heights. The first order of business is that they are missing Megan, but wish her a safe trip with borrowed gear. In shop news, all three locations of The Path Bike Shop are hiring a full time technician with competitive pay and full benefits. If you are interested email tani@thepathbikeshop.com with a resume to get something started. Tune in to hear more about what bikes are coming into the shop, what brands may be landing, and what bikes may or may not be able to be verified as real in this latest episode of The Path Podcast.

Mike McCormack, the man of Breck Epic, comes on with Mark to give you the low down on the race. They discuss the evolution of the race as it enters it 9th year of racing, some of the mistakes and setbacks, and how the race has grown over time. Mike discusses how the first year the day he wrote his merchandise check is the day the global economy tanked, and how they have worked to overcome this in the following years. This year they mix things up by comping entry for some really amazing athletes to elevate the race to another level of competition and camaraderie, by letting the everyday Jack and Jill rub elbows with the most elite athletes of the sport of mountain biking. Mike discusses their decision to work with USAC for 2017 and what that means for the Breck Epic. Also, they talk through what amenities are offered from the race Breck Epic, and how Mike is continuously learning to make the race better.

The gang tackles an odd show this week: no questions, no donations, just an hour of shooting the breeze about bikes, rims, and the usual stuff. Kenny and Matt don't have much in the way of stories but Andrea has a zinger of a tale (tail) from racing Breck 68 this past weekend. Andrea tries prodding Matt into a rant about suspension on drop bar bikes by mentioning the new Pinarello, but Matt makes lemonade out of lemons and tries to project where all of this is going in the next few years.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE
The crew launches in with the normal banter and updates. Andrea is finally riding her Pivot Switchblade, Kenny blows up the Reba fork doing some big-ness on the lift runs, and Matt has light news. They discuss how Chris Plesko is leading the Colorado Trail Race on a rigid single speed in terrible weather and how hard it must be. Then weather strikes and a storm knocks Kenny out of the mix so Andrea and Matt knock out the questions.

Ben sits down with Jeff for the second time on MBR and you don't want to miss it. They run through how Jeff got started riding, how he tasted his breakfast at the end of his first Leadville 100 and how that plays into how Tailwind was started. The story goes through a lot of growth, from using a Kitchenaid stand mixer to make one batch at a time to buying a tumbling mixer, but not having the money for a motor, how he made his own sifter using an orbital sander, and how as the business has grown to a 12 person team, they still keep a personal touch on every order.

When Griff repeatedly failed to learn to bunny hop on his own, no matter how many how-to videos he watched, he took an online course. After a 3 month struggle, he’s now a beginner but was amazed at how difficult it was. In this episode, he explains his top 5 reasons why it’s so hard to learn. If your expectations are realistic, you stand a better chance of learning what some say is the most difficult skill in mountain biking: the bunny hop.

Ben gets David Krimstock on a solid internet connection to get his scoop on how he has packed so much living into the first 26 years of his life. Things all start for David as being a state champion swimmer before age 10, to having a rough go with addiction and drugs that finally takes control after a nasty longboarding accident as his junior year of high school was ending.
Once this happened and athleticism wasn't the top priority, the drug use frequency and potency ramped up rapidly to a climax of IV drug use, flunking out of rehabs, and overdosing in Denver bus stops. The rest of the story is in the show, tune in to hear how David is now racing at an elite level and leading others through the Jaywalker Lodge.

This is a special flashback posting for the newer listeners who don't know the roots of the JRA Crew. This show is from April 18, 2016 when the X7 Dumpster fire ignites. Also, a link to a really cool flask for some very "Excited Armadillos".
Matt is antsy and skips right to listener questions. They hammer out the most listener questions they’ve answered in a loooong time. Those questions include plenty of drivetrain talk, as well as whether or not people should dump their crappy bikes.
