Greg Gleason has won Trans Iowa two years in a row. After finishing the 10th annual race in 2014 in 26 hours and 22 minutes and a year of hard work and dedication, Greg was ready to rock at the 2015 Trans Iowa. It was all looking good until the forecast for the race weekend began to change. As the race approached, the gloom and doom sirens rang out among racers and Trans Iowa fans and followers.

It began raining on Friday afternoon and evening off and on. By late Friday night/early Saturday morning, it was pouring rain. A cold soaking rain. The roads were soaked and the forecast for Saturday was cold rain. The rain let up for the start at 4am in downtown Grinnell, Iowa, but soon the relentless wind and rain hit, and the field was decimated. Only one racer made Checkpoint 1 on time and that was Greg Gleason.

Listen in as Greg shares his story about Trans Iowa v11 and how he managed to get to Checkpoint 1 and complete 120 miles in 12 hours and 20 minutes. He shares his story about getting into gravel racing, preparing and racing for Trans Iowa, and gives a lot of other great information and thoughts. This episode is filled with great insight into racing one of the toughest races out there.

About 40 Hands

A fan of riding bikes with one gear, malt liquor, riding without knowing how many miles I’ve covered, and strip clubs that let you bring your own keg. I typically have a stupid grin on my face, it is because deep down I know that no matter what, my mom thinks I’m cool. Denver, Colorado, USA

Danielle Musto is back in the house! She interviews Salsa Cycles rider, Andrea Cohen, about her life of riding and racing bikes in gravel events. Andrea only started riding within the last five years after having a Jimmy Johns bike delivery job. Since then she has ridden in Trans Iowa four times, with a finish in 2013. She has also been successful at the Dirty Kanza 200. Andrea also chats about her future in mountain biking. Listen in to hear a good discussion of two successful women of cycling.

If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for a future show, please email us at info@mountainbikeradio.com.

From Andrea: "I live, work, and play in Iowa City, Iowa. Iowa may not have epic mountains or vast skylines, but it boasts hundreds of miles of gravel. That is where I found my true calling. In 2012 I attempted my first Trans-Iowa, got lost, and was instantly hooked. I have been there every year since. I am constantly looking for that next adventure to keep me teetering on the line between insanity and clarity."

If you've been following along with Drew's how-to series about building trails, you've probably been waiting for this one - the actual building. Drew discusses corridor size and considerations, inslope turns and switchbacks, rock armoring, and elevated trail tread. Drew also interviews Ed Kessler, Co-Owner of Ptarmigan Ptrails. They discuss various topics about trailbuilding and give listeners some great insight into the thoughts and processes that go into building trails in various areas and situations.

If you or someone you know is in charge of trail projects or organizing work days for your group, Drew wants you to email him. Share your projects and when your work days are, and he'll share that information in future episodes.

Matt and Andrea are quickly realizing that Colorado is all uphill. Kenny is still on flat land. They spend half of the show talking about road bikes, cars, and some other things and a little bit about some gearing options. The gang does answer two listener questions - one about 3" wide tires and the other about bike options similar to a Santa Cruz 5010. Bonus: Matt meets nice older ladies.

A huge thanks to this week's supporters!

Thanks for your support - the money is currently going directly to new microphones for each of them.

I get you up to date on a few items, then share thoughts about my first month being officially coached by Drew Edsall, and finish up with an interview with Travis Macy. Travis is a very accomplished athlete with many top finishes in several disciplines, including adventure racing, trail running, mountain biking, and snowshoeing. He's a husband, father, teacher, and author and is filled with perspective on bridging the gap between high level competition and raising small children. We discuss his new book, The Ultra Mindset, as well as raising kids and keeping life, training, and racing in balance.

The Ultra Mindset:

An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life

Travis Macy summited glacial peaks in the French Alps, rapelled into cavernous limestone caves in China, and ran through parched deserts in Utah.  Most famously, he won the Leadman, a high-altitude combination trail running marathon, 50-mile mountain biking race, 100-mile mountain biking race, 10K run, and 100-mile trail run.  Macy accomplished it without exceptional strength, speed, flexibility, high tech performance labs, or performance-enhancing drugs.  His secret?  A precise and particular outlook he calls the “Ultra Mindset,” principles for daily life which are neither mysterious nor the sole province of ascetics or elite athletes: embrace fear, rewrite stories we tell ourselves, and master the art of seeking help, among others.  By applying the Ultra Mindset principles to other areas of life, anyone can find success that otherwise would have been impossible.
