ABOUT THIS EPISODE
John Burke is the President of Trek and wants the best for everyone at Trek, as well as the entire country. He has tremendous experience working with people and enjoys reading and current events. Throughout his life, he’s been interested in learning from other leaders and taking action himself.
In this episode, John shares his life and experience during his early years at Trek and some of the early lessons that have contributed to his current status. Then John discusses his newest book, 12 Simple Solutions to Save America. Listen in for some good perspective from one of the cycling industry’s leaders about how we can help change the country for the better.
About the book, 12 Simple Solutions to Save America:
“In 2011, John Burke attended his son’s graduation ceremony at Marquette University. Author David McCullough was the commencement speaker, and he gave some advice that day that really stuck with Burke. Those words were: “at some point, do something for your country.” That evening, Burke began to think about what he could do for his country. For years he had been disappointed by the Government’s inability to solve any of the big issues our country faced.
It was that evening on the drive home from his son’s graduation ceremony that Burke decided he would write a book about the big problems America faces and solutions to fix those issues. In 12 Simple Solutions to Save America, Burke talks candidly about what he believes should serve as America’s core values and offers 12 simple solutions to some of the most complex problems that America faces.”

Tom chimes in to give his background and to explain how being the CEO of Oprey for 15 years has given him the prep he needs to grow elevenpine as their product evolves. With a little nudging from Matt, Tom gives a rough idea of what products to expect from them in the future.

Ben sits down with Jeff for the second time on MBR and you don't want to miss it. They run through how Jeff got started riding, how he tasted his breakfast at the end of his first Leadville 100 and how that plays into how Tailwind was started. The story goes through a lot of growth, from using a Kitchenaid stand mixer to make one batch at a time to buying a tumbling mixer, but not having the money for a motor, how he made his own sifter using an orbital sander, and how as the business has grown to a 12 person team, they still keep a personal touch on every order.

Ben gets David Krimstock on a solid internet connection to get his scoop on how he has packed so much living into the first 26 years of his life. Things all start for David as being a state champion swimmer before age 10, to having a rough go with addiction and drugs that finally takes control after a nasty longboarding accident as his junior year of high school was ending.
Once this happened and athleticism wasn't the top priority, the drug use frequency and potency ramped up rapidly to a climax of IV drug use, flunking out of rehabs, and overdosing in Denver bus stops. The rest of the story is in the show, tune in to hear how David is now racing at an elite level and leading others through the Jaywalker Lodge.
