EPISODE SPONSOR - EPIC RIDES:

The Grand Junction Off-Road - May 29-31, Grand Junction, Colorado

Epic Rides

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Danielle Musto is back in the house! She interviews Salsa Cycles rider, Andrea Cohen, about her life of riding and racing bikes in gravel events. Andrea only started riding within the last five years after having a Jimmy Johns bike delivery job. Since then she has ridden in Trans Iowa four times, with a finish in 2013. She has also been successful at the Dirty Kanza 200. Andrea also chats about her future in mountain biking. Listen in to hear a good discussion of two successful women of cycling.

If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for a future show, please email us at info@mountainbikeradio.com.

From Andrea: "I live, work, and play in Iowa City, Iowa. Iowa may not have epic mountains or vast skylines, but it boasts hundreds of miles of gravel. That is where I found my true calling. In 2012 I attempted my first Trans-Iowa, got lost, and was instantly hooked. I have been there every year since. I am constantly looking for that next adventure to keep me teetering on the line between insanity and clarity."

Matt and Andrea are quickly realizing that Colorado is all uphill. Kenny is still on flat land. They spend half of the show talking about road bikes, cars, and some other things and a little bit about some gearing options. The gang does answer two listener questions - one about 3" wide tires and the other about bike options similar to a Santa Cruz 5010. Bonus: Matt meets nice older ladies.

The Ultra Mindset:

An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life

Travis Macy summited glacial peaks in the French Alps, rapelled into cavernous limestone caves in China, and ran through parched deserts in Utah.  Most famously, he won the Leadman, a high-altitude combination trail running marathon, 50-mile mountain biking race, 100-mile mountain biking race, 10K run, and 100-mile trail run.  Macy accomplished it without exceptional strength, speed, flexibility, high tech performance labs, or performance-enhancing drugs.  His secret?  A precise and particular outlook he calls the “Ultra Mindset,” principles for daily life which are neither mysterious nor the sole province of ascetics or elite athletes: embrace fear, rewrite stories we tell ourselves, and master the art of seeking help, among others.  By applying the Ultra Mindset principles to other areas of life, anyone can find success that otherwise would have been impossible.

Mark Sirek of Salsa Cycles recently released a post on the Salsa Cycles Culture Blog called "Location Sensors: An Essay." In the post, he encourages cyclists to pick their heads up off their bars, move their eyes away from their gps screens, pull out the earbuds, and experience the world around us. Listen in to hear the audio version of that post as Mark reads his writing for you.

"Remember and work to replicate and build on that feeling of freedom we all felt the first time we rode somewhere, away from home. On that ride, even familiar places had new sights, sounds, and smells because we arrived exposed and free to absorb it all. The thing that hooked us all was about far more than the bike. Now think about all the other rides you’ve been on, and some of the particulars you may have missed. Go back if you can. Keep your eyes and ears open. Taste the “world famous” dish a town is known for, and wonder why if it’s weird. Keep asking questions."

About the author: Mark Sirek

I had to live on both coasts a couple of times to realize that maybe being born in the Midwest wasn’t just arbitrary. I’m drawn to the terrain here, and if you catch me with one of this region’s supreme IPAs in hand, I’ll talk your ear off about my favorite spots. I’ll always take every opportunity though to explore every nook and cranny anywhere I can on a bike, because that’s what makes me feel most alive.

James recently had the opportunity to attend a new fitness event, the Strength Matters Summit. Headlined by the likes of Dan John, Steve Maxwell, Mark Reifkand, Dave Whitely, Perry Nickelstein and a whole host of “who’s who” in the strength and conditioning world, it was a great chance to learn what some of the best in the world have been up to lately. Listen in to discover his thoughts about the event.

From James:

"Held in sunny San Diego, the Strength Matters Summit was a great time with some great people. The driving force behind Strength Matters are some great guys from England who have great vision for what they are trying to do with the summit. In a world full of entry level courses and seminars, Strength Matters is attempting to stand out as a source of advanced level information for experienced, successful coaches.

It was an event that I was really looking forward to and one that certainly did not disappoint. I came away with pages of notes and some really big “aha moments” that will help me create even better training programs. I also met some great people and was introduced to the art of nail bending and tearing a deck of cards in half.

In this podcast, I review my weekend and share my notes and thoughts from the presenters. There were some great lessons about creating great habits, how the big toe and obliques are the key to your power and why you need to massage your breathing muscles among many others. If you’re interested in the best training methods to help you improve your strength and cardio, then this is one you don’t want to miss.

If you are in the fitness field or are interested in the latest and best strength and conditioning info, you should also check out the Strength Matters website at http://www.strengthmatters.tv. They have an excellent podcast as well as some other great resources that I use myself.

That’s it for now, I just got back from a Dan John seminar so I’m sure I’ll have some great stuff to share from it as well. Until then…

James Wilson
